Mosquito bites are a common part of summer life in Tel Aviv. Most bites are harmless and go away on their own, but in some cases, especially for young children or visitors not used to local mosquitoes, bites can be more noticeable.
Normal and Larger Reactions
A typical bite might itch and swell slightly for a day or two. Some people—especially young children or visitors—might have a stronger reaction, with more swelling, redness, or warmth. This is still usually harmless and goes away on its own in a few days.
When to Check In With a Doctor
It’s worth seeing a doctor if:
Swelling makes it hard to see, eat, or walk
There’s a high fever or strong fatigue
You’re not sure if it’s just a bite or something else

A Note About the Asian Tiger Mosquito
This small striped mosquito is common in Tel Aviv and throughout Israel. It tends to bite during the day, especially in shady or green areas like parks, and may cause more noticeable reactions in people who are not used to it.

Simple Ways to Avoid Bites
Use mosquito repellent with DEET or picaridin
Wear light long-sleeved clothes if you’re in parks or gardens
Avoid standing water near your balcony or hotel
Sleep in rooms with screens or air conditioning

If You’re Bitten
Mild reaction: cold compress and over-the-counter antihistamine, Aloe Vera Gel
Larger reaction: apply mild corticosteroid cream
Severe reaction - Oral Steroids, Oral Antibiotics
